Privacy policy

Last updated: May 9, 2026

1. Introduction

This privacy policy describes how SnapGuide (“we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, uses, and protects information when you use our mobile application and website at snapgui.de. SnapGuide is operated under the jurisdiction of the United States.

The short version: we collect the minimum we need to recognise landmarks, deliver stories, and remember that you bought the app. We don’t sell your data, run advertising trackers, or keep your photos.

2. How the app works

SnapGuide identifies landmarks from a photo you take inside the app and plays back a short audio story about that landmark. Recognition happens on our servers because the catalogue covers more than 47,000 landmarks worldwide and is continuously expanding — running the full model on every device would be slow, drain your battery, and miss new locations.

The photo you take is transmitted to our recognition server over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection, used to identify the landmark, and then immediately discarded. We do not store, archive, or train models on your photos. We never associate your photos with your account or identity.

3. Data we collect

3.1 Waitlist data

If you sign up for the SnapGuide waitlist on our website, we collect your email address, the timestamp of your sign-up, and basic technical signals (such as the page URL and any UTM parameters from a marketing link). The email is stored in our Supabase database and added to our Resend audience so we can send you a single confirmation email and the launch announcement. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any email we send.

3.2 Purchase data

When you purchase a license or pass, we collect your name, email address, and payment information through our payment processor (Stripe). We do not store your card details — Stripe handles all payment processing in compliance with PCI-DSS standards.

3.3 Account and license data

We store your email, the type of license you hold (Founding 500, Day Pass, Trip Pass, or Wanderer), its activation and expiry dates, and a device identifier used to enforce reasonable account-sharing limits. We do not collect contacts, phone numbers, or social profiles.

3.4 Camera and photo data

SnapGuide requires camera access to take landmark photos. To be explicit:

  • We only access the camera while you are actively using a recognition feature in the app.
  • The captured photo is sent to our recognition server over HTTPS, processed, and discarded within seconds.
  • We do not store, back up, or share your photos with third parties.
  • We do not use your photos to train AI models.
  • We do not access your phone’s photo library.

3.5 Location data (optional)

If you grant the app permission, we use your approximate location at the moment you take a photo to dramatically improve recognition accuracy (knowing you are in Paris helps disambiguate a tower). Location is sent with the recognition request, used in real time, and not stored against your account. You can deny location permission at any time; recognition still works, it’s just slower and less accurate in dense areas.

3.6 Usage analytics

We collect anonymous, aggregate usage metrics (such as how many landmarks are recognised per day, recognition success rates, app crashes, and which countries SnapGuide is being used in). These metrics are numerical only and cannot be used to identify you. We do not use third-party advertising or behavioural tracking SDKs.

3.7 What we do not collect

  • We do not sell your data to anyone, ever.
  • We do not run third-party advertising or retargeting trackers.
  • We do not access your contacts, calendar, microphone, or photo library.
  • We do not track you across other apps or websites.

4. How we use your data

We use the data described above to:

  • Identify landmarks from photos and stream the matching audio story.
  • Process your purchase and grant access to the app.
  • Send transactional emails (confirmation, receipt, launch, password reset).
  • Diagnose bugs, improve recognition quality, and prioritise new landmarks.
  • Comply with our legal obligations.

5. Data sharing

We do not sell, trade, or share your personal data with third parties for their own purposes. We share strictly the data needed with the following service providers, who act on our behalf:

  • Stripe — payment processing.
  • Supabase — database hosting for waitlist and account data.
  • Resend — sending transactional and launch emails.
  • Vercel — hosting the website and recognition API endpoints.
  • A media CDN — delivering the audio story files efficiently to your device.

We may also disclose information if required by law, court order, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of SnapGuide, our users, or the public.

6. Data retention

We retain account, license, and purchase data for as long as your account is active and as long as needed to comply with tax and legal obligations. Anonymous usage metrics may be retained indefinitely. You may request deletion of your account and personal data at any time by emailing hello@snapgui.de.

7. GDPR and your rights

SnapGuide is designed to be GDPR-friendly. If you are in the EU, UK, or another jurisdiction with similar laws, you have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal data. To exercise any of these rights, email hello@snapgui.de from the address associated with your account and we will respond within 30 days.

8. Cookies

Our website uses essential cookies for waitlist confirmation and basic session management. We do not use tracking cookies, cross-site retargeting cookies, or third-party advertising cookies.

9. Children’s privacy

SnapGuide is not intended for use by children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will promptly delete it.

10. International users

SnapGuide is operated from the United States. By using the app or website, you consent to your information being transferred to and processed in the United States and any country where our service providers (listed in Section 5) operate.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated date. Continued use of the app or website after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy. For material changes, we will send a notice to your account email.
